Sightseeing in Ariège

Ariège  remains one of France’s best kept secrets. One of the least densely populated areas of France, it’s history dates back to pre-historic man, the evidence of which can be found in any of the grottos and caves in the region. It is also the heart of Cathar Country and the pilgrims’ route of St. Jean de Compestela.

The Pyrénées and surrounding area are ideal for every kind of outdoor pursuit: horse riding, cycling, walking, swimming, bird watching, wind-surfing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, pot-holing and of course, mountaineering.

Markets are a way of life in France and every Monday morning the market in the medieval town of Mirepoix is an outing not to be missed.

Throughout the Summer months there is always something to celebrate in any one of the neighbouring villages and towns – from local village fetes to music and dance festivals and the dramatic medieval fair set in the 10th century castle grounds of Foix the capital town. Most of these activities are free and are advertised in the local press.

Toulouse is France’s 4th city and is known as the ‘Pink City’ owing to the red brick used in many of the buildings. Apart from offering every amenity that a major city can it is home to Europe’s largest aeronautical industry where currently the Airbus 380 is being constructed the world’s largest passenger plane. Visits are available to their museum.

The Mediterranean is just one and a half hours by car and three hours from here you could be in Barcelona.

Whatever you want, it’s here…
